Current Controller Betty Yee has weighed in on single-family <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dillonliam\/status\/1380643064385953800\">home zoning<\/a> and low-income housing restrictions, as well as divestment from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mle_goldman\/status\/1152777715994562560\">for-profit prisons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group about-hiring-process election-2022-onyx\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"about-the-hiring-process\">About the hiring process:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Incumbent Betty Yee is termed out, which has made the open statewide seat one of the more competitive races this election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s always a challenge for any Republican to win statewide office, policy analyst Lanhee Chen \u2013 who has worked on several high-profile U.S. political campaigns, including Mitt Romney\u2019s 2012 presidential bid \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.cdn.sos.ca.gov\/sov\/2022-primary\/sov\/51-controller.pdf\">finished first in the June primary<\/a> with 37% of the vote. Chen hopes to sell voters on the idea that someone outside the majority party will be an effective check on the state\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s up against Malia Cohen, the Democratic Party\u2019s favorite and chairperson of the California State Board of Equalization. Cohen bested a crowded Democratic field that included state Sen. Steve Glazer from Orinda; Ron Galperin, the city controller of Los Angeles; and Yvonne Yiu, a city councilmember from Monterey Park in Southern California.&nbsp;While she finished second with 23% in the primary, she now has the advantage of running in a heavily Democratic state in November.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The major applicants emphasize the position\u2019s watchdog role, but also want to expand the job description.
