Literalmente, los biomarcadores me salvaron la vida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Todo empez\u00f3 con una sensaci\u00f3n de cosquilleo en el fondo de la garganta, una molestia que no desaparec\u00eda. Despu\u00e9s de semanas de malestar, al punto que tuve que ir al m\u00e9dico, escuch\u00e9 esas tres palabras que nadie quiere escuchar: \u201cTienes c\u00e1ncer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dos crecimientos en mis pulmones eran enormes y un esc\u00e1ner cerebral mostr\u00f3 tumores tan grandes que mi onc\u00f3logo se sorprendi\u00f3 de que pudiera incluso caminar. Ten\u00eda c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n en etapa IV y mis m\u00e9dicos coincidieron un\u00e1nimemente en que el panorama era sombr\u00edo. De hecho, sin tratamiento inmediato, me dijeron que me quedaban unos seis meses m\u00e1s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No hay suficientes personas que comprendan que cuando te diagnostican un c\u00e1ncer en etapa avanzada, casi siempre no existe una cura completa. Claro, existen medicamentos enormemente potentes que ayudan a tratar el c\u00e1ncer e incluso le dan m\u00e1s tiempo, pero con ellos vienen efectos permanentes a largo plazo. El dolor punzante de la neuropat\u00eda en las manos y los pies le quita el sue\u00f1o. Las met\u00e1stasis cerebrales inutilizan partes enteras del cuerpo. No puedes conducir, no puedes usar cuchillo ni tenedor, al menos as\u00ed era para m\u00ed. Ah\u00ed es donde los biomarcadores entraron en escena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cada forma de c\u00e1ncer tiene mutaciones o biomarcadores. Identificarlos puede facilitar la categorizaci\u00f3n y ayudar a los m\u00e9dicos a elegir qu\u00e9 tratamiento utilizar, como terapia dirigida, inmunoterapia o quimioterapia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al igual que los copos de nieve, ninguna forma de c\u00e1ncer es id\u00e9ntica, por lo que las pruebas de biomarcadores en el momento del diagn\u00f3stico son absolutamente fundamentales. Como testimonio de lo lejos que han llegado los tratamientos para el c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n, hubo un momento en que la quimioterapia o la radiaci\u00f3n eran nuestras \u00fanicas opciones; las pruebas de biomarcadores cambiaron eso por completo y ahora ofrecen muchas opciones de tratamiento diferentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En mi caso particular, los resultados de las pruebas de biomarcadores salvaron mi vida. Espec\u00edficamente, di positivo en un biomarcador conocido como mutaci\u00f3n ROS1<\/a>, lo que signific\u00f3 que mi c\u00e1ncer podr\u00eda tratarse con una p\u00edldora revolucionaria dirigida. Esto redujo el tama\u00f1o de mis tumores hasta el punto de que ahora estoy en remisi\u00f3n completa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Si bien las pruebas de biomarcadores me salvaron del c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n, todos los pacientes con c\u00e1ncer en etapa avanzada deben poder tener acceso a las pruebas de biomarcadores, y es esencial que sean oportunas y asequibles. Cuanto antes est\u00e9 disponible la informaci\u00f3n sobre la existencia de biomarcadores, antes podr\u00e1n los m\u00e9dicos iniciar, en algunos casos, medidas que salven la vida del paciente. Los retrasos en las pruebas de biomarcadores pueden significar literalmente la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte para muchos pacientes con c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proyecto de ley del Senado 535<\/a>, introducido por el estado Senadora Monique Lim\u00f3n<\/a>, un dem\u00f3crata de Santa B\u00e1rbara, prohibir\u00eda a las aseguradoras de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica que ya cubren las pruebas de biomarcadores exigir autorizaci\u00f3n previa para las pruebas de biomarcadores para los miembros del plan con c\u00e1ncer avanzado o metast\u00e1sico en etapa III o IV. Me estremezco al pensar cu\u00e1ntas \u201cautorizaciones previas\u201d requeridas le han costado la vida a personas al crear retrasos cr\u00edticos en el acceso a las pruebas de biomarcadores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esta legislaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n aborda una importante cuesti\u00f3n de equidad que a menudo plantean las herramientas de gesti\u00f3n de la utilizaci\u00f3n, como la autorizaci\u00f3n previa. La mayor\u00eda de los pacientes con c\u00e1ncer (m\u00e1s de 80%) son tratados en centros oncol\u00f3gicos comunitarios que pueden no tener el personal adecuado para gestionar la carga administrativa de la autorizaci\u00f3n previa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eliminar la demora administrativa impuesta al personal de las cl\u00ednicas de salud para los planes que ya cubren las pruebas de biomarcadores podr\u00eda tener un impacto positivo en los pacientes tratados en centros oncol\u00f3gicos de menores recursos. La SB 535 tendr\u00e1 un impacto positivo en los pacientes con c\u00e1ncer, raz\u00f3n por la cual ha recibido apoyo bipartidista un\u00e1nime y ahora est\u00e1 esperando la firma del gobernador Gavin Newsom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

En nombre de todos los pacientes con c\u00e1ncer en etapa avanzada en California, insto encarecidamente al gobernador a firmar la SB 535 y eliminar la regla de autorizaci\u00f3n previa para los planes de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica que cubren pruebas de biomarcadores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debemos tener acceso oportuno y asequible a diagn\u00f3sticos que informen las decisiones de tratamiento para pacientes con c\u00e1ncer en etapa avanzada. Todo californiano diagnosticado con c\u00e1ncer en etapa avanzada, donde el tiempo es esencial para seleccionar tratamientos, se merece esto, y nada menos.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
