CalMatters\u2019s visited high schools and colleges in Stockton, Sacramento, and Fresno, to dig into ballot propositions with students.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\n

As CalMatters\u2019s election coverage hits TikToks<\/a> y Reels<\/a> this year, we\u2019re being more intentional than ever about reaching young voters. It\u2019s no different with our in-person VotingMatters event series: Five of the eight events we\u2019ve done so far were at schools and colleges, and that\u2019s by design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, VotingMatters came to the Central Valley with events at schools in Stockton, Sacramento, and Fresno. Students dug into the nuances of each ballot proposition in lively group discussions, and talked about the implications of raising the state minimum wage<\/a>, allowing local governments to raise rent controls<\/a>, o reclassifying some misdemeanors as felonies<\/a>. Nearly all the students at our events shared one major frustration after learning more about the propositions: when voters must choose \u201cYes\u201d or \u201cNo\u201d on ballot measures, they\u2019re forced to reduce issues with gray areas into a decision that\u2019s black and white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At our Sacramento State event, organized with CapRadio<\/a>, student government leaders came to participate in group discussions, while student journalists with the Avisp\u00f3n estatal<\/a> interviewed attendees. Our Stockton event, organized in collaboration with stocktonia<\/a>, reached students at Colegio Delta San Joaqu\u00edn<\/a>, where the Office of Student Life put together a voter registration table. And for some of the older students at our Central East High School<\/a> event in Fresno, they will be voting for the first time this November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The importance of these in-person VotingMatters events is exactly the conversations that the attendees have with each other. That\u2019s especially the case with young voters, who historically<\/a> have not turned out to vote at the rates that older generations do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
