Gavin Newsom has aument\u00f3<\/a> more than $22 million for his run for governor. Patrick Wright hopes he notices one donation of $125 from his Ferret PAC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wright, who answers his phone \u201cFerrets Anonymous,\u201d has been on a mission for 25 years to persuade California\u2019s legislators to legalize ferrets as pets, without success<\/a>. He hopes Newsom<\/a> will change that if he is elected governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wright told me: \u201cHe accepted the money. Sometimes they return it. I got a nice thank you note.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Then again, the Newsom campaign has not returned Wright\u2019s calls or responded to his pleading tweets. Wright also approached Republican Juan Cox<\/a>, Newsom\u2019s opponent, at a campaign stop at Rudfords Diner in San Diego, and asked for his support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe looked at me like I had three eyes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

State scientists and environmentalists oppose legalizing ferrets, believing they will escape and do what their cousins the weasels do: reproduce and hunt prey, including burrowing birds and other native critters. Although Newsom\u2019s spokesman opted against discussing the topic in any detail, Wright should not count on Newsom reversing that stand.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
