As leaders of the world\u2019s 5th largest economy, their participation is important, but it\u2019s more urgent for them to act once they return.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\uadf8\ub9cc\ud07c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/ftp\/arxiv\/papers\/2103\/2103.07801.pdf\"> latest research<\/a> reveals California\u2019s climate crisis overwhelms policies to stop it, and our low-income communities, communities of color and seniors face the most harm. If unchecked, this mismatch will undo decades of work Californians have dedicated to preserve a healthy environment and build an equal society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders rarely face circumstances where bold action is a moral duty. Our planet will reach a dangerous level of climate change as early as 2027. After failing to take meaningful action this year, what state leaders do next will dictate whether we preserve a safe and healthy future for all Californians or leave behind a damaged state for our children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The climate is already changing. This summer was California\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/cag\/statewide\/time-series\/4\/tavg\/3\/8\/1895-2021?base_prd=true&amp;firstbaseyear=1901&amp;lastbaseyear=2000\"> hottest on record<\/a>, after the 2010s were the<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/climate-change-hottest-decade-warmest-2019\/5852569\/\"> hottest decade<\/a> ever. California just experienced its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-10-18\/california-records-driest-year-in-a-century\"> driest year in a century<\/a>. Every corner of the state faces severe<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/states\/california\"> drought<\/a>. Conditions are so extreme in our agricultural heartland that fields are being left fallow, orchards are being ripped out and harvests will be smaller. Rain is now a rare event that comes through bomb cyclones causing deadly mudslides and flash floods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These conditions fuel catastrophic wildfires that block out the sun while choking millions with toxic air. A record<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fire.ca.gov\/incidents\/2020\/\"> 4.2 million acres<\/a> burned last year, an area only slightly smaller than the nine-county Bay Area.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capradio.org\/articles\/2021\/09\/28\/dangerous-air-as-california-burns-america-breathes-toxic-smoke\/\"> Over the last four years<\/a>, wildfires caused \u201csmoke days\u201d 45 times a year in San Jose, 32 in Los Angeles and 23 in San Diego.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intensity of these climate extremes is expected to grow<a href=\"https:\/\/ramanathan.ucsd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/411\/2021\/03\/California-Bulletin-Word-Final_20210317.pdf\"> by at least half<\/a> this decade, an alarming reality that will further reduce our water supply and access to clean air and fresh food. The pressures of a changing climate may be a nuisance for some Californians, but they threaten the survival of many.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extreme<a href=\"http:\/\/427mt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/427_CA_HeatHealth_DecisionTool_UserNeedsAssessment-1.pdf\"> heat causes more deaths<\/a> than other natural disasters, especially in our cities. Concentrations of pavement and building materials absorb and re-emit heat. A lack of urban greenscapes intensifies heat through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/green-infrastructure\/reduce-urban-heat-island-effect#:~:text=%22Urban%20heat%20islands%22%20occur%20when,heat%2Drelated%20illness%20and%20mortality.\">urban heat island effect<\/a>, disproportionately harming communities inhabited by low-income people of color unable to afford air conditioning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prolonged heat exposure can cause death from heat stroke and dehydration. It also increases the risk of death and health complications from chronic illnesses like kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workers on construction sites and farms face new exposure risks from heat and smoke. If climate-altering emissions continue at current rates, workers will collapse at higher rates at jobs they can\u2019t afford to lose. This seems like an inevitability in<a href=\"https:\/\/scripps.ucsd.edu\/research\/climate-change-resources\/faq-climate-change-california\"> Fresno, which will experience 43 extreme heat days per year<\/a> starting in 2050.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our seniors may face the greatest risk. Wildfire-induced interruptions to our power supply, now common, create a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/equity-lab\/article254930057.html\"> frantic scramble<\/a> for those reliant on electrical medical devices. Many have died because they cannot find emergency oxygen tanks, backup generators or conserve dwindling battery power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, Californians must acknowledge an uncomfortable truth. Other governments are doing significantly more on climate. Last year, the United Kingdom \u2013 just behind California with the world\u2019s 6th largest economy \u2013 pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 68% below 1990 levels by 2030. That\u2019s 70% more aggressive than California\u2019s climate goals. Last month, the city of Los Angeles committed to run on clean energy by 2035 \u2013 10 years ahead of California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading scientists claim California must reduce emissions at least 80% below 1990 levels by 2030 while also removing more carbon from the atmosphere than we emit. They also note<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/ftp\/arxiv\/papers\/2103\/2103.07801.pdf\"> we have the tools to do the job and eliminate 75% of the state\u2019s air pollution<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time for Californians to demand real action on climate.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After failing to take meaningful action this
