Health care is a human right and CalCare has made clear the just path as an alternative to the inequitable system we have in place today.&#8221; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But a lot is still at stake politically: The California Democratic Party&#8217;s progressive caucus last week <a href=\"https:\/\/fox40.com\/inside-california-politics\/progressives-threaten-to-pull-endorsement-from-california-lawmakers-who-reject-single-payer-health-care-bill\/\">threatened to block endorsements<\/a> for any lawmaker who didn&#8217;t support the bill, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProgCaucusCDP\/status\/1488319775096786945\/photo\/1\">said Monday<\/a> it will still move forward with those plans.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Kalra&#8217;s move didn&#8217;t go over well with the bill&#8217;s powerful sponsor, the California Nurses Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnursesunited.org\/press\/nurses-condemn-california-assembly-giving-up-on-bill-guarantee-health-care\">which slammed him<\/a> for &#8220;providing cover for those who would have been forced to go on the record about where they stand on guaranteed health care for all people in California.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Speaker Anthony Rendon \u2014 perhaps trying to avoid blame for the bill&#8217;s death after blocking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-pol-sac-anthony-rendon-single-payer-progressives-20170626-htmlstory.html\">a vote on a similar proposal<\/a> in 2017 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Rendon63rd\/status\/1488309537039814663\">said<\/a> he was &#8220;deeply disappointed&#8221; Photo by Eric Risberg, AP Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\uc640 \ud568\uaed8 <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2022\/01\/california-budget-newsom\/\">Newsom&#8217;s recent budget blueprint<\/a> topping $286 billion, you&#8217;d be forgiven for missing <a href=\"https:\/\/esd.dof.ca.gov\/Documents\/bcp\/2223\/FY2223_ORG5225_BCP4999.pdf\">a $1.5 million request<\/a> to dismantle San Quentin&#8217;s Death Row and transfer condemned inmates to other state prisons. The proposal, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-death-row-closed-prisons-gavin-newsom-d59ae606239abadb2dfa03be71e54649\">first reported by the Associated Press<\/a>, aligns with Newsom&#8217;s adamant opposition of capital punishment: &#8220;I think premeditated murder is wrong in all its forms and manifestation, including government-sponsored premeditated murder,&#8221; Newsom said at his Monday press conference. The governor in 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/newsletters\/whatmatters\/2020\/10\/silverado-fire-orange-county\/#h-other-stories-you-should-know\">took the unprecedented step of filing a court brief<\/a> challenging California&#8217;s application of the death penalty, a year after he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2019\/03\/13\/governor-gavin-newsom-orders-a-halt-to-the-death-penalty-in-california\/\">declared a moratorium on the practice<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, Newsom insisted Monday that his plans to repurpose Death Row are consistent with <a href=\"https:\/\/lao.ca.gov\/ballot\/2016\/Prop66-110816.pdf\">a ballot measure California voters approved in 2016<\/a> to accelerate executions.
