Often provided by insurers, private firefighters visit the homes of typically wealthy clientele as a fire approaches and take preventive measures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But critics argue these companies create a two-tiered system where the haves get better protection than the have-nots. County who are not directly involved in fighting or cleaning up after the wildfires <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/environment\/wildfires\/2025\/01\/la-fires-workers-lost-jobs\/\">have also been severely affected<\/a>, report CalMatters\u2019 Alejandra and Jeanne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latinos hold 34% of jobs in the Palisades fire area, but represent only 7% of the population, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/latino.ucla.edu\/research\/wildfires-and-latino-workers-analysis\/\">UCLA Latino Policy and Politics Institute<\/a>. As many as 35,000 jobs held by Latinos could be lost permanently because of the L.A. County fires. These include gardeners, housekeepers and landscapers who are now out of a job because their employers lost their homes or business to the blazes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hermelinda Guadarrama is one such worker: Her cleaning contracts in the Altadena area are on pause since the fires broke out, and she has been without an income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Guadarrama:<\/strong> \u201cMaybe we didn\u2019t lose our apartment (to the fires), but what\u2019s going to happen to our rent? \u2026 What will happen to my daughters, my granddaughter?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Labor Department on Thursday did say the L.A. region will receive $10 million to train and create temporary jobs for unemployed workers. Meanwhile, immigration advocates have pushed for years for the state to expand unemployment benefits to undocumented workers. In September, Gov. Newsom during a preview of his budget proposal said he too wanted more government efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as CalMatters\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/author\/alexei-koseff\/\">\u963f\u5217\u514b\u8c22\u00b7\u79d1\u585e\u592b<\/a> explains, Newsom\u2019s time in office has seen <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/capitol\/2025\/01\/gavin-newsom-spending-california-trump\/\">an expansion of state government<\/a> \u2014 marked by new initiatives, departments and services. His latest <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2025\/01\/gavin-newsom-2025-california-budget\/\">budget plan<\/a> is the second largest state spending plan ever, and total budget spending is nearly $100 billion more this year than <a href=\"https:\/\/dof.ca.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/352\/2023\/03\/CHART-B.pdf\">before Newsom assumed office<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Republican Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.digitaldemocracy.org\/legislators\/suzette-martinez-valladares-165461\">Suzette Valladares<\/a> of Lancaster said it was \u201cscary to think that (Newsom) thinks we&#8217;re doing good,\u201d and that the governor \u201cshould be taking notes\u201d from the new federal agency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Marybel Batjer, Newsom\u2019s first government operations secretary, said cutting back on government doesn\u2019t guarantee it\u2019ll be more effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Batjer:<\/strong> \u201cYou won\u2019t save money that way. You will have more people who are homeless.
