Here\u2019s a look at the official field of candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-gray-background-color has-background calmatters-summary\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"has-small-font-size calmatters-summary-heading\"><strong>\u603b\u4e4b<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<p class=\"calmatters-summary-content\">A few moments of controversy have touched an otherwise sleepy, wide open race to be California\u2019s next governor. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\n<p><strong>Last updated: March 9, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least eight Democrats who&#8217;ve held office before are competing to succeed termed-out Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/tag\/gavin-newsom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u52a0\u6587\u00b7\u7ebd\u68ee<\/a> in the 2026 general election, but first they&#8217;ll have to get through the June primary. Two Republicans who are polling well will also be on the governor\u2019s race ballot, setting up a wide-open contest that has left Democrats nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most recent polling has shown that likely California voters are closely divided between five candidates: Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco, and Democrats Katie Porter, Eric Swalwell  and Tom Steyer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With such a wide-open field, <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2026\/02\/democratic-convention-crowded-governors-race\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2026\/02\/democratic-convention-crowded-governors-race\/\">Democrats at the party&#8217;s February convention<\/a> were unable to endorse a single candidate, meaning pressure is building on candidates with lower polling numbers and less ability to fundraise to drop out of the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The primary election is June 2. Here\u2019s a look at the field right now:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#h-katie-porter\">\u51ef\u8482\u00b7\u6ce2\u7279<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-eric-swalwell\">Eric Swalwell<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-steve-hilton\">Steve Hilton<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-chad-bianco\">Chad Bianco<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-tom-steyer\">Tom Steyer<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-matt-mahan\" type=\"internal\" id=\"#h-matt-mahan\">Matt Mahan<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-xavier-becerra\">Xavier Becerra<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-antonio-villaraigosa\">Antonio Villaraigosa<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-betty-yee\">Betty Yee<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#h-tony-thurmond\">\u6258\u5c3c\u745f\u8499\u5fb7<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-katie-porter\"><strong>KATIE PORTER<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Orange County Rep. Katie Porter, a Democrat, made a name for herself as one of a \u201cblue wave\u201d of female, Democratic lawmakers elected to Congress during the first Trump administration in 2018. A law professor at UC Irvine who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate last year, she gained attention for her tough questioning of corporate executives using her signature whiteboard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, she was caught on camera trying to walk out of a TV interview with a reporter who pressed her on whether she needed Republican support in the race. A second video followed, showing Porter berating a staff member during a Zoom call. She appears to have moved past the debacle after apologizing but is no longer at the top of the polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-eric-swalwell-nbsp\"><strong>ERIC SWALWELL&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric Swalwell, <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2025\/11\/california-governor-eric-swallwell-announcement\/\">a Bay area congressmember and former prosecutor<\/a>, is a prominent antagonist of President Donald Trump on social media and a cable news darling who is leaning heavily on his Trump bonafides. He was one of several members of Congress appointed by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to help lead the second Trump impeachment after the attempted Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection and is now the latest Democrat under attack by the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eric-swalwell-bill-pulte-mortgage-lawsuit-trump-5f3636e98287b14740679d91d80a178d\">over his mortgage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swalwell has decried how Californians have been disproportionately targeted by a second Trump administration, whether through vengeful immigration raids or the cancellation of critical cancer and health research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/calmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/112525-Eric-Swalwell-JC-AP-01-CM.jpg?resize=1024%2C682&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A person wearing a blue sweatshirt with a badge that reads \u201cUS Democrats\u201d and a microphone pinned to the lapel stands in front of a group of people speaking and gesturing with their hands. Photo by Jeff Chiu, AP Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-steve-hilton\"><strong>STEVE HILTON<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News commentator, was an adviser for British conservative Prime Minister David Cameron before moving to California in 2012 with his wife, a tech executive who has led communications at Google, Uber and Facebook. He released a book last year calling California \u201cAmerica\u2019s worst-run state.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has focused his campaign so far on blaming Democratic policies for the state\u2019s high gas and home prices. Policies he\u2019s pushing include income tax and business regulatory cuts, and a promise to advocate for suburban-style single family home construction over urban density.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chad-bianco\"><strong>CHAD BIANCO<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pro-Trump Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is neck-and-neck with Hilton and Swallwell in the polls, making Democrats nervous, though it&#8217;s unclear where he&#8217;ll land in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly two-to-one and a GOP candidate hasn\u2019t won a statewide seat in nearly 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cowboy-hat-toting Bianco has heavily criticized Democratic governance. He argues for loosening regulations on businesses and says he wants to overturn California\u2019s sanctuary law that restricts local police from cooperating with federal deportation officers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tom-steyer\"><strong>TOM STEYER<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Joining a wide field of other Democrats, billionaire investor and climate activist <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2025\/11\/california-governors-race-tom-steyer\/\">Tom Steyer joined the race in November<\/a>, but has spent millions since then plastering his name on TV and radio ads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steyer, who made his fortune by founding a San Francisco hedge fund, has used his wealth to back liberal causes, including the environment. Photo by Sean Rayford, Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-matt-mahan\">MATT MAHAN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahan, the mayor of San Jose, is the latest Democrat to enter the race after saying in the fall he wasn\u2019t excited by the selection of candidates. Don\u2019t expect him to join the other candidates\u2019 jockeying to be the biggest opponent to Trump. A Silicon Valley moderate, he\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/opinion\/2025\/08\/30\/matt-mahan-gavin-newsom-trump-social\/\">criticized Newsom<\/a> for overly focusing on \u201cresisting\u201d Trump, especially on social media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says the state overregulates businesses and fails to comprehensively address homelessness and crime. He broke with the party in 2024 to support Proposition 36, the ballot measure voters approved to increase penalties on some drug and theft charges. Mahan has <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2026\/01\/governors-race-matt-mahan\/\">honed in on reducing street homelessness<\/a> with hundreds of tiny homes as well as a policy to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/12043418\/san-jose-council-approves-mahans-shelter-enforcement-plan\">arrest unhoused people<\/a> who refuse repeated offers of shelter placements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-xavier-becerra\"><strong>XAVIER BECERRA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra was California\u2019s first Latino attorney general before serving as a cabinet secretary for former President Joe Biden. He is running primarily on a platform of lowering health care costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He gained attention last year in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2025\/11\/newsom-chief-of-staff-indicted\/\">negative headlines<\/a>, when federal prosecutors indicted a Sacramento powerbroker in an alleged corruption scandal that rocked the state\u2019s Democratic establishment. At its center was a dormant campaign account held by Becerra, from which prosecutors allege Gov. Gavin Newsom\u2019s former chief of staff Dana Williamson conspired with other political consultants to steal $225,000. Williamson is charged with helping to divert the funds to the wife of Becerra\u2019s longtime aide, Sean McCluskie, who pleaded guilty in the alleged scheme.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Becerra has not been accused of wrongdoing in the case and has said he was unaware of what was happening. But it\u2019s still possible the association \u2014 and the implication he wasn\u2019t paying attention \u2014 will taint his campaign, already polling at just 8% last fall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-antonio-villaraigosa\"><strong>ANTONIO VILLARAIGOSA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Los Angeles mayor and former Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa is among the more moderate of the Democratic field. He boasts of his time running the state\u2019s largest city, during which he boosted the police force. He ran for governor unsuccessfully in 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-betty-yee\"><strong>BETTY YEE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Former state Controller Betty Yee emphasizes her experience with the state budget and the tax system, having been a top finance office in ex-Gov. Gray Davis\u2019 administration and having sat on the state Board of Equalization.&nbsp;While she has little support in the polls, she was the second-highest ranking candidate for governor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2026\/02\/democratic-convention-crowded-governors-race\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2026\/02\/democratic-convention-crowded-governors-race\/\">California Democratic Party convention<\/a> in February. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tony-thurmond\"><strong>TONY THURMOND<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, a Democrat, is the only candidate currently in a statewide seat. He emphasizes his background as a social worker who grew up on public assistance programs in a low-income family.
