Corona and her sons joined an estimated 2,900 stadium workers in the Bay Area placed on furlough, according to union estimates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The family has struggled to make ends meet off of unemployment benefits and Corona\u2019s husband\u2019s salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more devastating would be the potential loss of health benefits. Because her healthcare is tied to working the previous season, Corona\u2019s coverage is set to expire in February.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to be able to afford anything that\u2019s out there,\u201d she said. \u201cI just don\u2019t know what I\u2019ll do without having medication for my husband, who takes seven pills a day as seizure medicine, and then with my daughter\u2019s asthma medicine also.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-background is-style-solid-color\" style=\"background-color:#ffda83\"><blockquote class=\"has-text-color has-dark-gray-color\"><p>\u201cYou\u2019re talking about workers who, because they\u2019re in these communities (of color), maybe have the highest predisposition to testing positive for COVID-19 and actually dying from COVID-19.\u201d<\/p><cite>anand singh, president of unite here local 2<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In California, football games are being played with no fans due to the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/newsletters\/whatmatters\/2020\/11\/california-coronavirus-hospitalizations-hit-record-high\/\">ban on large events<\/a>. It was the same for soccer this fall. The entire Major League Baseball season \u2014 including playoff games in Los Angeles and San Diego \u2014 was played with no spectators; the Dodgers won their World Series title playing in Texas. And basketball teams played last season\u2019s championship games in a \u201cbubble\u201d in Florida, and this season, which starts today, Lakers, Kings, Warriors and Clippers games will be played in empty stadiums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anand Singh, president of UNITE HERE Local 2, which represents 1,000 stadium workers at the Giants\u2019 Oracle Park and the Warriors\u2019 Chase Center, said 2020 has exacted an \u201cincredible toll\u201d on employees in the sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re talking about a group of working people that are already kind of living on a razor\u2019s edge in the Bay Area, trying to piece together salaries year round on seasonal sporting events,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re talking about people who are overwhelmingly people of color. You\u2019re talking about workers who, because they\u2019re in these communities, maybe have the highest predisposition to testing positive for COVID-19 and actually dying from COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Singh said the fact that these employees are likely to lose their healthcare at this point in the pandemic is illustrative of a \u201cbroken\u201d system of employer-based healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to urging employers to continue health benefits, he said unions will be pushing legislators in Sacramento for \u201cmeaningful and serious health care reform\u201d based on these workers\u2019 experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/4734536\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Jim Kohler, west division president for Levy Restaurants, the food service contractor at Oakland Arena, said in an email that the company has extended health benefits to February despite their contract with the arena expiring Nov. 30.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have and continue to welcome open discussions with the union based on our active contracts,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s no secret these continue to be tough times for the hospitality industry nationwide, but we remain hopeful to welcome team members and guests again in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bay Area unions have already negotiated \u201crecall rights\u201d for their stadium workers, meaning employees should be able to return to their former positions, rather than be replaced by new hires at a lower wage. Still, Singh said enforcement of those provisions will largely fall to local governments, such as the cities of Oakland and San Francisco, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2020\/07\/14\/coronavirus-oakland-gives-first-dibs-to-laid-off-airport-and-hotel-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed emergency ordinances<\/a> \u4eca\u5e74\u65e9\u4e9b\u65f6\u5019\u3002&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Corona said strong enforcement of recall rules will be critical because she can\u2019t see herself starting over from the bottom again at age 49.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of companies are, from what I\u2019ve been hearing out there, taking younger people where they can just pay them pennies, basically,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing in the company for 21 years, you know, working your way up&#8230; to lose all that, that\u2019s very devastating, worrisome \u2014 basically, you&#8217;re throwing your life away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-background is-style-solid-color\" style=\"background-color:#ffda83\"><blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s still going to be awhile before it&#8217;s safe to fill up a stadium or an arena, so the economics is quite challenging.\u201d<\/p><cite>john clithero, marketing professor at university of oregon<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just seasonal employees who have lost their jobs \u2014 it\u2019s the full-time front office people, too. The Oakland A\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2020\/10\/26\/oakland-as-lay-off-20-percent-of-employees-across-business-baseball-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laid off<\/a> 20% of their baseball and business operations employees in October, and the Dodgers laid off an unrevealed number last month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The franchises earned money from TV contracts, but not a penny from fans or concessions or other marketing promotions. Dodgers President Stan Kasten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2020-11-18\/dodgers-layoffs-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that the team\u2019s 2020 losses were \u201cwell north of $100 million.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University of Oregon marketing professor <a href=\"https:\/\/business.uoregon.edu\/faculty\/john-clithero\">John Clithero<\/a>, who studies sports business, said the pandemic has forced teams and leagues to reassess their business models. But one thing that hasn\u2019t changed is the importance of preserving brand image in the communities they serve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeams invest a tremendous amount of time and effort to integrate with the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clithero said that public pressure might push teams to continue paying some employees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope, and would expect, teams can realize the value in working with partners who try to maintain support for their employees,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s still going to be awhile before it&#8217;s safe to fill up a stadium or an arena, so the economics is quite challenging.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As basketball season opens with no fans, Californians who work at ballparks, arenas and stadiums are out of work.
