Are you a student journalist attending a California college or university? Do you want to gain valuable experience covering higher education, work with other student journalists from around the state and see your stories published by CalMatters? The CalMatters College Journalism Network is currently recruiting paid fellows and contributors for fall 2020.
We’re creating a new kind of higher education reporting, with student voices at the center. As part of our core team of fellows, you will take part in ambitious joint reporting projects with other fellows, as well as covering stories on your own from your college.
Fellowships are part-time, flexible, come with a stipend of $650 per month and start in September. Expect to report, write, participate in weekly training calls and connect with your audience through social media and live online events. You’ll also attend at least one in-depth, virtual training at the beginning of the program.
Contributors pitch and write stories for the College Journalism Network on an occasional basis, and may also contribute reporting to our group projects. You’ll receive $100-$300 per story, depending on complexity, plus access to regular training that will help you become a better reporter. Applicants who are not selected as fellows may be invited to become contributors.
We especially encourage students from communities that are underrepresented in journalism to apply. Got a question? Contact us at CJN@calmatters.org.
