CALmatters is a media startup dedicated to explaining the policy and politics of America’s biggest state. We produce vivid, original multi-media journalism and data-driven news analyses distributed to more than 160 media partners statewide and on CALmatters.org.
We are looking for a journalist with a special focus on California climate policy. California is a global leader on climate policy and this is a tremendous opportunity for a skilled writer and reporter who is passionate about storytelling and about making a difference. The beat will focus on what the state is doing, how it is working and what difference it is making for California and beyond. It means tracking regulations through the stakeholder process, following progress toward emission goals and communicating through multimedia formats to a broad audience about what’s happening and why it matters to them. This is a full-time position based at our main office in Sacramento.
The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of how the legislative and regulatory parts of California government work, and demonstrated success translating complex environmental issues into relatable, human stories. He or she will be part of a two-person environmental team within a larger staff covering an array of state policy issues.
This journalist will be an excellent writer and reporter. Our multi-media packages include longform stories that use elegant and engaging language to provide insight into complex topics for a broad audience. Our storytelling portfolio also includes brief and quick turnaround stories as well as card-deck explainers, data visualizations, video and podcasts.
CALmatters is a communication laboratory. We are nimble and experimental and we know not everything we try will be successful. This reporter will engage our audience during and after the reporting process to understand the interest in our topics and what that means for storytelling tools, language and topics.
Our journalists are public personalities. They reach audiences through social media, they appear on radio and television programs and they participate in live public events as panelists, speakers or moderators.
