State Assembly

Members of California’s state Assembly are up for election every two years, placing all 80 districts on the 2026 primary ballot. Democrats and Republicans are defending recently flipped seats and competing for open districts. Here are the contests CalMatters is watching in the primary.

District 7

Partisan Lean: Competitive

Voter Registration: Democratic 37%, Republican 33%, no party preference 21%

This competitive district includes areas of northeast Sacramento County, including Citrus Heights, Folsom and Rancho Cordova.

Incumbent Republican Josh Hoover faces retired teacher and principal Amy Slavensky in this competitive district. The district shifted rightward after redistricting, helping Hoover unseat then-incumbent Democrat Ken Cooley in 2022. The district voted for Kamala Harris in the presidential race in 2024 but re-elected Hoover by 7%. American Independent Party candidate Sanaz Motamedi is also in the running.

Partisan Lean: Safe Democratic

Voter Registration: Democratic 59%, Republican 15%, no party preference 19%

This safely Democratic district encompasses all of Marin County and about two-thirds of Sonoma County.

Five Democrats crowd the field in this open race to replace incumbent Damon Connolly, who is running for state Senate. Corte Madera Mayor Eli Beckman, Rohnert Park Councilmember Jackie Elward, Marin County Supervisor Eric Lucan, nonprofit executive and farmer Steve Schwartz and Tiburon Councilmember Holli Thier are the Democrats. They face Republican Eryn Cervantes, a corrections official who also ran in 2024.

Partisan Lean: Leans Democratic

Voter Registration: Democratic 40%, Republican 29%, no party preference 24%

This majority Latino district encompasses parts of Merced, Madera and Fresno counties.

Republicans are targeting this open seat after incumbent Democratic Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria announced her campaign for state Senate. The Latino-majority district, where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans, has shifted rightward in recent years, voting for Donald Trump in 2024. Mike Murphy, an attorney and former Merced mayor, is the leading Republican candidate and Fresno County Supervisor Brian Pacheco has lined up support from leading Democrats, including Soria. Democratic Livingston Councilmember Japjeet Singh Uppal is also in the running.

District 35

Partisan Lean: Safe Democratic

Voter Registration: Democratic 44%, Republican 25%, no party preference 24%

Based in Kern County, this district covers the cities of Arvin, Delano, McFarland, Shafter and parts of Bakersfield. It is a top target for Republicans this year.

Vacated by incumbent moderate Democrat Jasmeet Bains, who is running for Congress, this Latino-majority district is up for grabs. Though there are nearly twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans, the district has swung heavily rightward in the past four years. Democrat Andrae Gonzales, a Bakersfield councilmember, has the party’s endorsement. He faces fellow Democrat Ana Palacio, an ER nurse, and Republican mayor of McFarland Saul Ayon.

District 36

Partisan Lean: Leans Democratic

Voter Registration: Democratic 41%, Republican 29%, no party preference 23%

The district covers Imperial County and a large part of Riverside County, as well as portions of the eastern Coachella Valley, including Indio and Calexico.

Traditionally Democratic, this Latino-majority district voted for Trump by 1.3% in 2024. The same year, Republican Jeff Gonzalez flipped the formerly Democratic seat. Four Democrats are now challenging him to take it back, but none has raised enough to match incumbent Gonzalez. Democrats include Indio Councilmember Oscar Ortiz, Tomas Oliva, a former El Centro councilmember, Marlon Ware, a college professor, and Imperial Councilmember Ida Obeso-Martinez.

Partisan Lean: Competitive

Voter Registration: Democratic 39%, Republican 34%, no party preference 19%

This competitive district spans parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, combining Republican-leaning areas near Redlands and the Democratic enclave of Palm Springs.

Republicans are on defense in this purple district that includes both the deep-blue Palm Springs and Cathedral City and conservative suburbs. Incumbent Republican Greg Wallis narrowly won the seat in 2022 by 85 votes and defended it in 2024. He faces Democrats Leila Namvar, a former local labor leader and city planner, and computer programmer Jason Byors, neither of whom secured the Democratic Party endorsement.

This majority Latino Inland Empire district includes parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties and parts of Riverside.

Republican incumbent Leticia Castillo flipped this seat in 2024, defeating Democratic challenger Clarissa Cervantes by 596 votes in this heavily competitive Latino-majority district. This year is a rematch with Clarissa Cervantes, a Riverside councilmember who also ran in 2024. Democrat and real estate agent Paco Licea is also in the running.

Partisan Lean: Safe Democratic

Voter Registration: Democratic 56%, Republican 13%, no party preference 23%

This Los Angeles County-based district includes the city of Compton and parts of Carson, Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Five Democrats are running for this open, safely Democratic seat in Los Angeles County as incumbent Mike Gipson is terming out this year. Fatima Iqbal-Zubair, chair of the California progressive caucus, is close in campaign cash with Ayanna Davis, a trustee for the Compton Unified School District who is backed by the state Democratic Party. Eugene Allen, a former candidate for insurance commissioner, Lamar Lyons, president of the San Pedro Central Neighborhood Council and Magali Sanchez-Hall, a project manager at UCLA, round out the field.

Voter Registration: Democratic 35%, Republican 35%, no party preference 22%

This mixed district includes Republican-leaning stretches of Orange and San Diego counties as well as blue portions of San Diego County.

In this purple district, incumbent GOP Assemblymember Laurie Davies is running for a third term after defeating a Democrat by 5.3% in 2022 and by 1.7% in 2024. She faces Democrat Sergio Farias, a San Juan Capistrano councilmember and former mayor.
