How Your Organization Can Support Independent Journalism in California
WE ARE CALIFORNIA’S LARGEST JOURNALISM BUREAU FOCUSED ON STATEWIDE ISSUES that affect every resident of our golden state.
We are a non-profit newsroom and rely on the support of our readers to comprehensively cover, decipher and analyze California’s politics and policies. Increasingly, from one end of California to the other, our 180+ media partners rely on our reporting and commentary to inform their communities about why Sacramento matters and how decisions made there can and do impact their lives. Our work appears regularly in all of the state’s major newspapers, the leading public radio stations, the major news aggregators, dozens of online publications and leading news apps.
Our members and sponsors choose to support CalMatters because they understand that informed and civic-minded Californians contribute to a better California. They also understand that they do not influence our coverage or mission.
We are now inviting associations, corporations, nonprofits and other groups to become members of CalMatters to show their support for politically-informed and active Californians – and for nonprofit and nonpartisan journalism. As an institutional member, you can sponsor a variety of our high-quality editorial products – such as our newsletter, our elections guide and others.

Institute for Nonprofit News Statement
CalMatters retains full authority over editorial content to protect the best journalistic and business interests of our organization. We will maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.
We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support. We do not give supporters the rights to assign, review or edit content.
CalMatters also may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics, but our organization maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.
CalMatters will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more. As a nonprofit, we will avoid accepting donations from anonymous sources, and we will not accept donations from government entities, political parties, elected officials or candidates actively seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
