First-time voter Fernando Villarreal is looking forward to participating in the upcoming presidential election. “I think it’s a really important election for democracy and I think young people have a lot at stake when it comes to education, healthcare and a lot of other issues,” said the Palomar College freshman. Good morning, California. It’s Wednesday, September 23. State audit slams UC The debate surrounding admissions to California’s most prestigious university system just got a lot more heated. Four University of California campuses “unfairly admitted” 64 applicants, including 22 “falsely designated” athletes, between the 2013-14 and 2018-19 school years based on their connections to wealthy donors […]

The state auditor found a lot of holes in the way the University of California conducts its admissions process, from inappropriate donor influence to questionable student athlete decisions. The state audit also disagrees with the UC’s internal audit.

At the September UC Regents meeting, top UC officials said things likely won’t return to normal until at least fall 2021, student housing revenue losses could be a billion dollars per year, but enrollment seems stable.

Our international students have paid tuition, signed housing leases and registered for classes; and now they have to get on the next plane home.

The majority of UC campuses have released guidelines and policies for the next school year. UC guidelines call for the vast majority of classes to be taught online, sparsely populated dorms and regular symptom surveys of students and employees.

The global coronavirus pandemic has inadvertently achieved what state officials have sought to do for decades: Californians have parked their cars. Freeways and highways are clear. And the constant burn of fossil fuels has been markedly diminished.

Government policy is one thing, real life another. What happens if your germ-carrying preschoolers suddenly pose a lethal threat to their elderly grandparents? What becomes of your teenagers’ future if their education is disrupted, long-term? How protected are we if schools cancel class but kids then disperse to malls and bounce houses and movie theaters?
