Shelly Tan

Shelly Tan is a visual journalist, designer and developer who specializes in interactive graphics and data reporting. She is passionate about applying rigorous journalism to creative storytelling, and believes that playful design can work alongside uncompromising reporting to make the inscrutable understandable. Her background in Fine Arts also makes frequent appearances in her work — take a look at any of her past projects, and chances are you’ll see some of her illustrations.
She was previously a Graphics Reporter at the Washington Post for 12 years. Her projects covered everything from counting every Game of Thrones death, to AI’s environmental costs, to Trump’s tax bills. Her work has won Malofiej, Edward R. Murrow and multiple Society for News Design awards, among others. She graduated from Northwestern University and currently lives in D.C.
