We appreciate the efforts of Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and all others ready to join the water user community in making the voluntary agreements work for all Californians.
It’s easy to get caught up in the heated rhetoric of the moment as did Kim Delfino in her guest commentary.
Water users working to finalize the voluntary agreements were faced with a difficult situation. Senate Bill 1, as written, would have removed the foundation on which the voluntary agreements are built, making them nearly impossible to complete. SB 1 was a poison pill for what we believe is collaborative progress.
These agreements, the result of a joint effort between urban, agricultural, and environmental water users, represent the best hope for California’s environmental future.
They could end the cycle of lawsuits, bring reliability to water users, utilize new science as well as provide annual funding for environmental projects.
