Governor Gavin Newsom has cast himself as a champion for mental health. The state’s current mental healthcare system has fallen short, he says, not for lack of funding, but for lack of leadership, strategic vision and political will. Many advocates and leaders are now expressing hope that significant improvements might be made to fix the state’s “broken” mental health system. What do those changes look like? And what specific steps can we take to get there? Join us for a discussion with some of the state’s leading voices on this important issue.

  • State Senator Jim Beall (15-Campbell): Lawmaker and leader in the California Legislature on mental health issues.
  • Thomas Insel, MD:Former director of the National Institute of Mental Health and current president of Mindstrong Health, an innovator working to transform brain health through science and earlier detection and treatment.
  • Alex Briscoe: Former director of the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency and one of the chief architects of the California Children’s Trust campaign to redesign children’s mental health care.
  • Kerry Morrison: Former executive director of the Hollywood Property Owners Alliance and Durfee Foundation Stanton Fellowship grantee, studying innovative systems of care in Trieste, Italy, with the idea of possibly implementing something similar in Los Angeles. 
  • Kelechi Ubozoh: Mental health advocate, suicide survivor and writer. She was invited along with suicide loss survivors, therapists, and researchers to present recommendations to California’s Statewide Suicide Prevention Plan.
