Despite limited testing requirements, California schools that have reopened for in-person instruction have largely avoided COVID-19 outbreaks. Still, some teachers and legislators say large scale surveillance testing is necessary to the rest of the state’s schools and that lack of data is a problem.

As schools get the green light to reopen, the form their teaching will take will vary widely, sometimes even within the same district.

Almost every waiver application for in-person instruction for grades K-6 has been approved by the state for schools in counties deemed a high risk. But private schools comprise an overwhelming majority of those schools, creating an equity problem.

The high school ethnic studies bill in the Legislature had all the stars aligned in its favor this year, so why was it defunded and implimentation delayed?
