Author Archives: Jackie Botts

Jackie covers income inequity and economic survival for the The California Divide collaboration. She previously reported for the Data and Enterprise desk for Reuters News, where her team won 3rd Place in the Philip Meyer Data Journalism Award and the Hillman Foundation’s June Sidney Award for "Shielded," a 2020 data-driven investigative series into an obscure legal doctrine called qualified immunity that protects police accused of excessive force. Before that, she reported for her hometown paper, The Santa Barbara Independent. Her coverage of immigration, the environment, and justice has also appeared in Pacific Standard, Public Radio International’s “The World” and The Philadelphia Inquirer, among other publications.
Jackie is a Report for America corps member.
